Men's Bible Study

So, what's the best bible study for men? That's a simple question but I'm not sure I can give a simple answer. Every group of men is really a collection of individuals. Each man has his own strengths and weaknesses. And so, when you're trying to decide on a bible study for your group, it's best to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit for guidance. I mean that sincerely. I don't know what's going on in the lives of every man. Some guys are very transparent, some are not. Having led a men's group for over twenty years, I've come to the humbling conclusion that there is no way I could figure this out on my own. It's from that place that I realize that only the power of the Holy Spirit will give the true guidance that I need.

Now, having said that, I will make a few comments about what we can do, through our humanly wisdom, to make a good choice. First, I consider the "age and stage" of the guys. Are the guys "mostly young" or "mostly older". Knowing that, you can discern what is of interest to your men. It's been said that young men are mostly interested in adventure and discovery. Middle aged men are seeking respect through excellence. And older guys are interested in "legacy". That alone, tells you a lot about your group.

Second, what is the spiritual maturity of the group - collectively? Do they faithfully do their lessons? Or do they just come to class and "wing it"? You need to choose material that is appropriate for their level of maturity but you also need to be raising the bar with each consecutive study. As the leader, you need to be pushing your group to a higher level.

Third, I recommend you alternate between systematic study and topical study. And while you always need to be learning about God's heart, you need to make sure your guys apply what they've studied. Knowledge is good, but unless your guys form strongly held convictions about what they've studied, it is of little value. I can't emphasize this enough. Why is it that so many Christian men struggle with inappropriate online images? Don't they "know" this is wrong? Of course they do. The problem is that they've never formed strongly held convictions about what they know to be true. Understanding this, make sure you don't rush through your bible studies, never having taken the time to allow your guys to "internalize" and apply what they've learned.

Now, if you're starting a brand new group, let me give you two options. A good book study that really resonates with men is "Man in the Mirror" by Patrick Morley. A good book of the bible to study is Joshua or a Gospel.

Think about your guys. Talk to the Lord about where they are as a group. Talk to the Lord about the guys individually. Then wait upon the Lord to guide you and speak to you.
